Cape Cod natives refer to is as “down cella”. The rest of the world refers to it as the basement. For most homeowners, the basement represents an opportunity to transform your “cella” into any number of possibilities: media room, man cave, play room for the kids, workshop, extra bedroom or guest room, sewing room, etc. Moniz Home Improvement can help you with any type of basement remodeling you envision.
Of course, a basement remodel in a Cape Cod home is not without challenges. Cape Cod basements are notorious for moisture. Dehumidifying systems are a prerequisite in any Cape Cod home and for very good reason: mold. So when it comes to your basement remodel, you must take that into account. It becomes even more of a factor if the room you envision requires carpeting.
When it comes to your basement; details matter
Another element to basement remodeling is proximity to the outdoors. Some basement rooms have direct access to the outside and that should be taken into consideration.
Many Cape Cod homes have a bathroom in the basement. Some will even have a stand-alone shower within the vicinity of the laundry for those days when you get back from the beach and don’t want to trail sand into the house. So, that must also be considered when creating bathroom remodel plans.
And, last but certainly not least, is the garage. The proximity of your garage to your basement also plays a part in your basement remodel.
We take all factors into consideration
All these variables make it essential for basement remodeling contractors to know the climate and know the terrain before drafting any designs. Ken Moniz is a lifelong Cape Cod resident who has seen hundreds of basements in the region. So, when you invite us into your home to discuss a basement remodel, you are talking to an expert.
After an initial assessment of your basement, we will start a discussion about what you envision for your basement remodel and the feasibility of that idea. For example, if you want a media room or “man cave,” then consideration should be given to availability of cable connections and routers as well as electrical outlets. Basements also tend not to be the best lit places due to lack of windows and natural light. So, planning the lighting is another consideration we will review.
Another strong point of interest for your basement remodeling project is flooring. Most basement floors are cement or concrete. Neither make for a very comfortable or attractive surface for a basement remodel. Yet carpeting may not be the solution either. We can plan for a worst-case scenario regarding moisture or flooding. Sometimes there’s not a whole lot you can do. So, selecting a flooring—perhaps tiles that can easily be maintained–might be the best option.
Your perfect basement
Taking all these factors into account, we will create a design where you can see what your basement remodel will look like. Once you approve the plan, we will schedule your work.
Moniz Home Improvement is fully licensed and insured and we have worked with most of the municipalities on Cape to attain the proper permitting. We will provide that service for you.
As a general contractor, we do work with sub-contractors. We are quite particular about these folks and will only work with sub-contractors who share the same values we do and are equally dependable and capable.
With all that said, what do you envision for your basement remodel? Will it be a media room so you can finally throw that huge Super Bowl party? Or is it a home office or spare bed room for guests? Maybe it’s a room for a son/daughter who moves back home?
